Short Story or Novel

I’m currently reading Gene Wolfe’s “Castle of Days” and came across this quote about the difference between an idea for a short story and one for a novel.

“If what interests you most is what’s going to happen, that’s a short story. If it’s the people or the scene, that’s a novel.”

This is one of those neatly packaged clarifications that really help me sort out my own ideas. Thank you, Gene!

The Land Across Arrives Next Tuesday

The Land Across Arrives Next Tuesday

We’re just under a week away from having a new Gene Wolfe book on the shelves! It’s been a long (three year) wait. I’m excited.

A nice chunk of the story if I do say so myself. Looks to be even more than what I listened to Gene read when I attended MadCon nearly three years ago. I’m looking forward to seeing what I can remember and what he might have changed. It feels like we’ve been waiting forever for this one to finally arrive and I can’t wait to get my hands on it at the end of November!

UPDATE: Cory Doctorow posts about the excerpt here.

Happy “Home Fires” Day

Home Fires” is released today!  Also, a new Decemberists album and larger iced coffees at Starbucks!  A rather good day all around for new stuff in my opinion.

Review of Home Fires

Lawrence Person has written a good review of Gene Wolfe’s upcoming novel “Home Fires.”  He gives you a basic idea of plot and characters without giving anything important away.  It’s a good overview if you want to know what you’re getting yourself into before you pick up the book.  “Home Fires” is due out January 18, 2011.  Thanks Lawrence!
